December Updates

We hope everyone had a happy Thanksgiving! We have a newsletter and calendar for the month of December available for all of our residents, along with a few very important updates.

Instead of a contest for the month of December, we will be giving out free cookies and hot chocolate from our office on Monday, December 8th starting at 12:00 noon. We will have these goodies while supplies last.

We will be closed for a few days (and partial days) around both Christmas and New Year’s. Please check the calendar and make a note of those days. As always, our emergency maintenance manager will be able to handle urgent situations. The phone number for that is: (850) 591-0808.

We would like to wish our students good luck on their final exams! For those who are graduating, congratulations! And to all, we wish you happy holidays.

Happy Thanksgiving!

Our office will be closing for Thanksgiving tomorrow (Wednesday) at 12:00 noon. We will re-open on Monday, December 1st, at 9:00 am.

We want to wish our residents a safe and happy Thanksgiving. Remember to drive carefully if you are traveling, to cook all of your food to the proper temperature, to not give your pets unhealthy and possibly toxic food scraps, etc. Equally importantly, we hope you all have a memorable celebration, whether with family or friends, and feast to your heart’s content.

Have a wonderful Thanksgiving, everyone!

Happy Veteran’s Day!

We would like to wish a very happy Veteran’s Day to our residents, friends, and neighbors! Thank you to our military service men, women, and animals for all your hard work.

For our veterans celebrating the day, take a moment to treat yourself! Check out USA Today’s list of freebies for veterans.

Want to help support our veterans? The following charities work to improve the lives of vets.

Homes For Our Troops builds “specially adapted” homes for severely injured veterans from Iraq and Afghanistan. Best of all, these homes are completely mortgage-free! Homes For Our Troops maintains an A rating by CharityWatch.org, using over 90% of donations to directly support veterans. As of today, Homes For Our Troops has built 169 homes for veterans. Read more about them here.

Companions For Heroes is an amazing organization that helps veterans and first responders as well as animals! By reimbursing adoption fees and providing animal trainers when necessary, Companions For Heroes provides veterans with companion animals who otherwise could have been euthanized in a shelter.  They are a nation-wide organization, pulling dogs and cats from shelters, rescues, and humane societies. Active duty military, Reserve, National Guard, military veterans, First-Responders (retired and active), next-of-kin, and immediate family members are all eligible. For more information about the organization and about companion versus service animals in general, check out their FAQs.

Freedom Service Dogs Of America is similar to Companions For Heroes, but instead of providing veterans with companion animals, they train dogs as service animals. This means these dogs are able to complete tasks to make their owners’ lives easier and help them maintain independence. Any dogs that aren’t able to become service dogs are adopted out into loving homes. Eligible clients include children, veterans, active duty soldiers, and other adults. Their dogs help people with disabilities including Autism, Cerebral Palsy, spinal cord and traumatic brain injuries, Muscular Dystrophy, Multiple Sclerosis, and Post Traumatic Stress Disorder.

Operation Home Front provides military families and individuals with financial support and emergency funding. Individuals usually receive financial aid in about 1-3 days for costly crisis including: emergency food and home repairs, critical baby items such as formula, food and diapers, home repair, moving assistance, Wounded Warrior Transitional Family Housing, etc. They have served over 4,000 families and 93% of donations go directly to programs supporting military families. CharityWatch.org gives them an A rating.

The PhoenixSouth Staff Takes On The ALS Ice Bucket Challenge

The PhoenixSouth staff is a close-knit group. So it only makes sense that when our Property Manager was nominated for the #ALSIceBucketChallenge, she preemptively nominated the rest of the office staff to participate as well. We closed at 5:00 on Thursday in order to complete the challenge.

We admit it can be fun to jump on the bandwagon. But to tell you the truth, we were pretty excited to promote awareness of ALS (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, commonly referred to as Lou Gehrig’s disease). As such, this blog post will not be about our apartments, but about the disease and the challenge that has raised not only awareness, but millions of dollars for research.

ALS is a neurodegenerative disease that damages and kills the nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord. Motor neurons are destroyed, and in some cases, people with this disease suffer from complete paralyses in the later stages. The muscles that cannot be used essentially waste away. After a diagnosis, the life expectancy of patients is generally about 2-5 years.

Life expectancies and early symptoms range by person, but more than half experience muscle weakness as one of the early indicators. Generally this weakness begins at the extremities. Other symptoms that may appear include twitching muscles, cramping muscles, difficultly speaking and projecting and in later stages, difficulty swallowing and breathing, and of course partial or complete paralysis. The progression of ALS can remit or pause, but researchers and doctors do not yet have an explanation for it.

Only about 5%-10% of cases of ALS are inheritable, but when they are it is a dominant trait. The rest of the cases are ‘sporadic’, meaning they can affect anyone.

So who is the ALS Association (ALSA)? The ALSA is the organization most benefiting from the Ice Bucket Challenge. As of August 27th, they have raised over 94 million dollars, nearly 4 times their annual earnings last year. They define themselves as “the only national non-profit organization fighting Lou Gehrig’s Disease on every front”. Through research, partnering with the US government, and providing resources and care to those already diagnosed with ALS, their goal is to “[build] hope and [enhance] quality of life while aggressively searching for new treatments and a cure”.

Here’s how the #IceBucketChallenge works: You watch a hilarious video of your friend being doused in icy water. They then call out a list of names: other friends they ‘nominate’ for the challenge. If your name is on that list, according to the ‘rules’, you have 24 hours to complete the challenge yourself (and preferably donate $10 or more to the cause) or you forfeit and pay a whopping $100. Should you decide to take the challenge, you must fill a bucket with ice and water, set up a video camera, and have a good friend dump the cold water on your head. After the shock wears off, nominate all of your friends and frenemies!

While most people donate specifically to the ALSA, there are certainly other non-profits that exist to help those with ALS, and you would by no means break any rules by choosing which charity you help.

Information gathered from http://www.alsa.org/ . (Also the recommended donation site for those who choose to participate in the Ice Bucket Challenge.)

A New Raffle For July

We have another raffle started for our wonderful residents. This month, in honor of National Hot Dog Day (July 23rd), our raffle prize is a gift card to the very delicious Tallahassee treasure, Voodoo Dog.

Voodoo Dog features what I consider to be thevoodoo dog best hot dogs ever created. Many are wrapped in bacon and topped with unique and drool-worthy condiments ranging from mac and cheese to sour cream and guacamole to hummus and cucumbers. No worries if that sounds a little too far out; they also have more traditional hot dogs, cheese fries, hamburgers, and vegetarian/vegan options to boot.

Residents only have to follow us on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/PhoenixSouth and then “like” or comment on our current raffle status. The deadline to enter is the 14th of July.
